Spartanburg Armed Robbery Chase Ends in Highway 176 Head-On Crash
Spartanburg County, S.C. - A frightening chain of events in Spartanburg, South Carolina, turned a reported armed robbery into a dangerous highway pursuit and, ultimately, a head-on crash on SC Highway 176. According to local reports, officers were called around 12:45 p.m. to an armed robbery at an apartment on Southport Road in Spartanburg. The victim told police that three masked suspects, armed with handguns, entered the apartment without knocking and demanded cash and valuables.
What followed placed not only the people inside the suspect vehicle at risk, but also everyone sharing the road that day. Reports state that the suspects fled in a black vehicle on SC Highway 295 toward John B. White Sr. Boulevard. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the I-26 ramp, but police said the vehicle fled as officers exited their patrol vehicle, beginning a pursuit.
The chase reportedly continued onto Interstate 26 and toward Interstate 85. At one point, police said the driver briefly lost control while attempting to merge onto I-85, then regained control and continued fleeing. The pursuit ended on Highway 176 in front of First Baptist Church North Spartanburg, where the suspect vehicle crossed the center line and crashed head-on into another vehicle.
That detail, a vehicle crossing the center line into oncoming traffic, is what makes this crash especially alarming from a public safety standpoint. Four people were identified as suspects: Marquis Janis Harold, 24; Jaiden Douglas McCoy, 18; Braelyn Christopher Kline, 20; and a 16-year-old juvenile female. All four suspects were charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, first-degree burglary, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Kline was also charged with failure to stop for blue lights, and Harold faced additional narcotics-related charges.
Authorities reported that none of the suspects or victims in the other car sustained life-threatening injuries. Still, “non-life-threatening” does not mean minor.
